Fish (Kentsion) Contaminant Sampling

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne – Environment Program and the River Institute partnered for a two-year kentsion consumption study project that involves sampling kentsion around Akwesasne in the Area of Concern. Sampling finished in fall 2021, samples are now awaiting analysis at the lab.

This project came to fruition as a means to help address concerns regarding contaminants, total Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB’s) and mercury, in local kentsion that Akwesasronon want to know about and use. The project also addresses a data gap for contaminant sampling along the southern shore of Kawehnoke (Cornwall Island).

This project will help inform BUI #1: Restrictions to Fish and Wildlife Consumption.

Eutrophication Monitoring Study

The River Institute in partnership with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and the Raisin Region Conservation Authority is undertaking a two-year (2022-2024) eutrophication monitoring study. The purpose of this study is to conduct water quality monitoring in tributaries, tributary mouths and at offshore areas within the St. Lawrence River Area of Concern at Cornwall and Akwesasne. The data will be used to assess the status of the Eutrophication and Undesirable Algae beneficial use impairment.
